Embrace Equity
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Observed annually on March 8th, IWD has its roots in the early 20th century, when women’s rights activists first began organizing rallies and protests to demand equal rights and opportunities.
The first IWD was celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, where women marched for voting rights and better working conditions. The day gained momentum over the years, with the United Nations officially recognizing IWD in 1973.
The year’s theme, #EmbracingEquity, emphasizes the need for swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. As we celebrate IWD 2025, we recognize that equity is not just a moral imperative, but a necessary condition for building a more just and prosperous society.
So, what can we do to promote equity and accelerate progress towards gender parity? Here are a few ideas:
- Educate yourself: Learn about the history of IWD and the ongoing struggles for women’s rights around the world.
- Amplify women’s voice: Use your platform to amplify the stories and achievements of women who are making a difference in their communities.
- Support women-focused charities: Consider donating to organizations that work to empower women and girls, such as Sonke Gender Justice or Women’s Voice and Leadership.
- Advocate for policy change: Contact your elected representatives and urge them to support policies that promote gender equality and equity
